Profile

Ir Professor Leung  is a multidisciplinary engineer and educator having worked in industries and academia in both US and Hong Kong for 45 years. In the past 18 years, he has developed nanofiber technologies for use in energy, environmental and healthcare applications. He is also an expert on centrifugal separation having developed ten technologies that have been used worldwide in wastewater treatment and chemical, industrial, and mineral applications. His two textbooks, Industrial Centrifugation Technology(McGraw-Hill 1998) and Centrifugal Separations in Biotechnologies (Academic Press Ed. 1 2007; Ed. 2 2020), have been referenced extensively by researchers and practitioners in the world. He is an innovator with 55 US patents covering separation, energy, healthcare technologies, and environmental applications. His recent invention, the electrostatically charged nanofiber facemask, can combat ultrafine pollutants and coronavirus viruses. In 2021, he has authored a book entitled Nanofiber Filter Technologies for Filtering Submicron- and Nano-Aerosols, published by Elsevier. This book with over 500 pages documented the state-of-art nanofiber filter technologies for capturing harmful aerosols, including airborne coronavirus. He has also invented titania composite nanofibers with graphene core that have both semiconductor and highly conductive properties in the same material, which can be coated on most surfaces for reuse. The new material have been used in dye sensitized solar cells and perovskite solar cells with excellent enhancement. It can also be used in photocatalyst that can purify air breaking down harmful gases and disinfecting airborne viruses.
