Ir Professor Ni’s research interests include high-performance supercomputers, highspeed networks, wireless sensor networks, peer-to-peer computing, and mobile computing. His early works on wormhole routing and multicast communication were highly cited and used in the design of supercomputers as well as large-scale multicore architectures. His work on QoS routing in the Internet was another highly cited contribution. He designed the first reference-based RFID location sensing technique, which has triggered many follow-up works. He is the Chief Scientist of China’s 973 program on wireless sensor networks. He has made many contributions in this area including opportunistic topology control, transceiver-free localization, energy-efficient life cycle design, and moving object counting with applications to coal mine safety, urban traffic control and pollution monitoring.
