The Hong Kong Academy of Engineering (HKAE), formerly known as the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences, is a leadership organization for the engineering community in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). It was established in 1994 by distinguished industry leaders, including Sir Sze-yuen CHUNG and Sir Charles Kuen KAO. The members are elected from among recognized leaders who have made significant contributions to the engineering field and related applications in Hong Kong, aiming to promote the advancement of engineering for the benefit of the community. In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the HKAE has adopted a new identifier to reaffirm its commitment to advancing engineering science and technology in Hong Kong.
Ir Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, JP, President of the HKAE and President of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, explained that the new identifier not only enhances the representation of the HKAE but also facilitates it to foster closer ties with the Chinese Academy of Engineering and other engineering institutions. This change reflects the Academy's goal to contribute to the establishment of Hong Kong as a global leader in engineering science and technology, in line with its founding mission and vision.
In addition to launching the new identifier, the HKAE also publishes a special commemorative book to celebrate its 30th anniversary, which chronicles the important history and development of the Academy from 1994 to the present day.
Over the past 30 years, the HKAE has endeavored to strengthen connections between local engineering professionals and experts from the Mainland and overseas. It has also actively supported the development of the local innovation and technology (I&T) industry. Notably, the HKAE introduced the prestigious Hong Kong Engineering Science and Technology (HKEST) Award in 2022, recognizing exceptional contributions and excellence among the younger generations in Hong Kong in the field of engineering science and technology. The award acknowledges young scholars, engineers, and technologists who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in developing creative solutions through research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. In the past two years, a total of eight individual/team award recipients have showcased Hong Kong's exceptional talents and achievements in engineering and technological innovation.
Looking ahead, the HKAE is committed to supporting the HKSAR government in leveraging the city’s unique advantages under the "One Country, Two Systems." It aims to contribute to the implementation of the blueprint for developing Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology hub and enhancing the city’s influence in global engineering and I&T industries.
Note: The officially registered name of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering remains "Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences". The Hong Kong Academy of Engineering will gradually update its official communications with the new identifier.
